Agility for mind and body in Steinegg Schoolhouse.
The LO Solo and LO Edge desks with their variety of desktop shapes – triangular, square, rectangular and semicircular – don't just make life easier and bring fluidity into the classroom. They open up completely new opportunities for both creative teaching and motivated learning.
Panta rhei – everything flows! The words of Greek philosopher Heraclitus encapsulate in a nutshell the vision for the refurbished classrooms in Degersheim Primary School. The goal: to introduce agility, versatility, and simplicity to the classroom with furniture that students could transform quickly, quietly, easily, and independently into the perfect learning environment for each situation. By transitioning the space from teaching in a circle to focused self-study, pairwork or groupwork as the situation demands, both students and teachers get a boost in motivation.

The concept
To create the right conditions for implementing Swiss Learning Plan 21, the school wanted to refurbish the classrooms, following the principles of the Chur model. In this model, the learning environment and classroom layout play central roles. Students decide on and organise their ideal learning environment, so that the space itself and the furniture are fundamental to the classroom experience. To achieve this, it must be easy for students and teachers to transform the classroom without bustle or noise – chalk+talk teaching room for one unit, self-study or project workspace for the next. The furniture and design elements don’t just meet functional and ergonomic requirements. They also play their part in creating a positive atmosphere and boosting motivation.
The furnishings
The classrooms at Steinegg Primary School were fitted out with height-adjustable LO Solo sitting/standing desks, along with the LO Edge desk system incorporating Click & Meet connectors.
For individual study, the LO Solo desks and custom wooden storage modules with plastic trays pair perfectly with the LO equipment boxes, and ensure students have ideal learning conditions wherever they are. They are complemented by the LO Edge sitting desks with their range of geometric desktop shapes (triangular, square, rectangular and semicircular), ideal for creating dynamic, playful environments for demonstrations and experiments in pairs and groups.
The students sit on Ray chairs by Holmris, which have highly ergonomic soft plastic seat cushions and help maintain energy while seated.
To ensure a balance between individualism, mobility, and order in the classroom, students store their textbooks and exercise books in individual plastic Rako boxes, each assigned a permanent place in the LO Customer Solution wooden storage module. Stationery and other equipment specific to the teaching unit is supplied to each student station from a small felt LO equipment box.
Teachers maintain control of the classroom from a mobile, height-adjustable LO Cockpit sitting/standing desk. Paired with a Simplex swivel chair by Girsberger, which features a 3D motion mechanism, they can remain dynamic in every teaching situation. The narrow LO Caddies provide compact storage for everything else necessary.
During 2024/2025, the classrooms will also be equipped with mobile room dividers and whiteboards from the LO Move range, providing additional flexibility in teaching style and classroom layout. These are more than just room dividers. They incorporate the Click & Meet connector system to link with the LO Edge desks, creating focused self-study spaces or, combined with a whiteboard, an ideal arrangement for groupwork.
The success
- The entire classroom has a completely different atmosphere. That has noticeable positive effects on our students’ attitude and motivation.
- Modern teaching is founded on using a variety of teaching methods. The new furniture system makes it easy to adapt and provide the versatility required.
- We can transition between different learning settings quickly, easily and quietly, without causing a disturbance to the other children.
- Ergonomics was given a high precedence, with students switching frequently between standing and sitting. Furthermore, the padded chair seats promote healthy movement while sitting.
- Our Facility Management is very enthusiastic, since all the furniture is on wheels, making the hard work of pushing heavy furniture around a thing of the past.
